The person who published the image of the “Closed Sauna” has located it in the wrong place on Google Maps.

The sauna from the photo is situated 1 mile further at the North-West. It is also facing the Lake “Törnesträsk” in Abisko, 200km North of the Polar Circle. The house located at 68.355512,18.821779 has another color and is a different construction. The coincidence is that it’s also a sauna, and it was closed when I got there.

The actual location of the closed sauna is at the point B.

1. Location :

Location A is situated in the Abisko scientific research zone.
The side of the lake was recommended to me as a place to observe the Aurora Borealis, the common phenomenon of the Kiruna region. It is sombre and there is no one to be seen.

2. Location B :

Thanks to the help of a strong team formed there, I was able to get the picture of the first sauna.

The house that you see above is the sauna which was posted on Google Maps. It is “closed”, as the legend says, because nobody made a reservation. Lina works at Abisko tourist station and answered my email :

“To be open, you need to make a reservation. Our guests have the possibility to rent the sauna for their group or family. Either at 15:00 o’clock or at 17:00 o’clock – each day of the year.”
